Katie Quaeck
Background
BiographyHaving grown up a stone’s throw from the beach in a small town in north Wales, I’ve always had a fascination with marine wildlife. Upon completing my A-Levels in 2006, I spent two years diving and sailing around south-east Asia, Australia and Fiji, before eventually returning to the UK to join the MSci Marine Biology program at the University of Southampton in 2008. During my degree I had the opportunity to participate in several fisheries surveys in the northeast Pacific with DFO Canada, which fueled my interest in fisheries ecology. I spent the remainder of my undergraduate course directing my studies towards fisheries research, and my final year dissertation focused upon examining the growth of six different species of deep-water fish, highlighting the importance of standardization of otolith reading techniques.
